Specialist: Mashariki Solutions

Nuru International is an NGO currently working on its pilot project in Western Kenya. Operations on the ground have been in existence for 18 months. The majority of the MFI operation has been in existence for 12 months. Nuru employs over 40 local staff with U.S.-based teams of 5 rotating in and out year-round. The MFI operation has seven employees, but will expand to 10-15 within the year.

At present, Nuru has around 1050 clients. Within the year, this will increase by another 500. Financial services include two savings program, which link to microcredit programs. There are loan and savings products for both individuals and groups. Through a vetting process, individuals from groups can “graduate” into various loan products, which are undertaken individually; however, savings accounts are offered to both groups and individuals without the vetting process.

Nuru works in five areas of development: agriculture, water and sanitation, health, community economic development, and education. The integrated development model is being developed by a small U.S. based team and growing team of local leaders to empower communities to lift themselves out of extreme poverty, building a self-sustaining model that continues to scale on its own to create impact in neighboring communities, districts, and eventually the country.
